Coconut Grove is Miami’s oldest continuously settled neighborhood, a low-rise, heavily canopied district on Biscayne Bay south of Brickell and east of Coral Gables. It covers roughly 5.6 square miles and is usually described in four parts: Center Grove, Northeast Coconut Grove, Southwest Coconut Grove and the West Grove. SW 27th Avenue is the common western edge.
Development
Settlement dates to the early nineteenth century, drawing sailors, naturalists and Bahamian labor; the name dates to 1873, when Horace P. Porter opened a post office he called Coconut Grove. Bahamian families built and settled the West Grove, which the City of Miami officially designated Little Bahamas in 2022. Coconut Grove was an independent municipality until it was merged into Miami in 1925. A commercial building wave between 1975 and 1983 produced CocoWalk and the Streets of Mayfair. More recently, Grove Central, a 23-story transit-oriented development at the Metrorail station, opened in 2024, the county reopened the modernized station in May 2025, and in July 2026 the Miami City Commission approved a rebuild of the Coconut Grove Playhouse behind its restored 1926 facade.
Parks & Recreation
Peacock Park, David T. Kennedy Park, Regatta Park and Alice Wainwright Park line the bay, along with Dinner Key and its marina, where the Pan American Airways seaplane terminal now serves as Miami City Hall. The Barnacle Historic State Park preserves Ralph Middleton Munroe’s 1891 house; Plymouth Congregational Church dates to 1917 and The Kampong, David Fairchild’s botanical estate, to 1916. Villa Vizcaya sits just to the north. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival in February and the Bahamian Goombay Festival are the neighborhood’s largest events.
Transit
Coconut Grove station, at 2780 SW 27th Avenue, opened in 1984 and is served by both Metrorail lines, with Douglas Road station just west and Vizcaya station to the north. There is no Metromover here; Brightline and Tri-Rail are reached downtown. The City of Miami Trolley runs a Coconut Grove route and the Coral Gables Trolley’s Grand Avenue route reaches the West Grove. Main road corridors are South Dixie Highway (US 1), SW 27th Avenue, Grand Avenue, Main Highway and South Bayshore Drive.
